T&B INTERVIEW: MIKIX THE CAT

To celebrate the release of his banging Girls Keep on Wondering EP—four tracks of pressurized crystalline pump-factor for your techno, house, or bass dance party—we interviewed one of our first signings, the funny, dapper, and always-laughing Frenchman known as Mikix the Cat. His name is pronounced like “my kicks” because he is the king of the punchy dancefloor beats, but his government name is Mike Gnacadja (say that three times fast). He comes from Paris but now lives in Berlin, where he can be found partying, eating cookies and milk, and pumping out hot tracks under the Mikix name and that of his other alias, Momma’s Boy (of Sound Pellegrino fame). We asked this young tiger to tell us more.
What kind of music did you start making at first?
I started producing at 16, doing jazz-fusion-soul-funk mashed up with break beats.
Who were your favorite artists when you were 15 years old?
Too many! James Brown to Alice Russell, Herbaliser to NYC hip-hop: EPMD, Big Daddy Kane, LL Cool J, Lords of the Underground. Good time music!
Where did you grow up?
I was born in Paris but raised in the suburbs of Paris in ‘95. In my neighborhood, you learned how to fight and run and make easy money.
What is your favorite thing to do in Berlin?
I like to go to random bars and just go with the flow—there is always something good to do when you are with nice company. For clubbing, I’m really into Weekend, Cookies, and Watergate.
What is the worst thing about Berlin?
Hipsters from outside of Germany.
What country is your family from?
They're from Benin, a small country in West Africa. Of course, it influences me: it’s the rhythm, baby.
You live with your brother, Cliff. What is the last argument you got in about?
Haha, what a question! I think it was about girls, as usual!
What are three qualities you like in a woman?
1. Ambitious; 2. Creative; 3. Redhead (yes, it’s a quality)
What was your first release ever?
It was called “Dead Disco” and it was signed to a Russian label on January 17, 2008.
What is your favorite of your releases?
Right now, it’s my last one, Girls Keep On Wondering, but I’m very proud of the "Freeze" one!
Fill in the blank: "Girls keep on wondering why Mikix the Cat…"
... is so cool!
If you could make a track with any person who would it be?
Wow... Quincy Jones!
What’s your favorite gig you played this year?
Japan at Le Baron, because it was magic and during Fashion Week. Eheheh!
What is your favorite thing to say in French?
"Enchanté." It means “Nice to meet you!”
What are your favorite cookies?
Everything that Cadbury is doing! <3<3<3<3
