Artist Q&A: ALEXIS MINCOLLA

For our 5 Year Anniversary, we held an art show celebrating our anniversary as well as showcasing some of our fabvorite artists and friends. The same day, we had our 5 Year Anniversary party and the next day I left for 2 and half weeks on tour. So looking back I felt like the artists and art for our Anniversary show went a little overlooked and didn't get it's attention i should have. So we'll be doing some Q&A's with each of the artists we collaborated with and giving you a little more info about their art and what they made especially for Trouble & Bass!
First up is our man Alexis Mincolla of The Overthrow and Prometheus Springs!
Don't forget to pick up one of his Tarot Cards of his framed Tarot Card piece!
How/when did you first get involved with trouble and bass?
My first run in with the Trouble & Bass crew was in Miami where we did a one-off T&B version of a Black Sunday. For those who don't know about Black Sunday, it was a sort of vaudevillian stop motion animation murder party that occurred for 1 year exactly. A mutual friend by the name of Xavier Burt put us in touch because he thought our aesthetics went nicely together and looking back he was right.
Whats the story behind your work for the art show?
I've always been fascinated by archetypes communicated through esoteric imagery so I felt what better an homage to the the crew then to try and capture the archetype of trouble and process it through the sensibilities of the tarot system.

Tell us about the process of your piece.
The Trouble Tarot was a sort of amalgamation and adaptation between three cards: The Magician, The Devil and The World. Those we're 3 elements that I felt embodied the archetype of trouble.

Do you have any inspiration for your own work/or this piece?
I wanted people to see the card and try and connect the dots themselves and let the archetype of trouble naturally resonate with the viewer.
What are some of your favorite T&B releases?
Drop The Lime - Devils Eyes [Deathface's Son Of Perdition Remix]
Drop The Lime - Doomsday Device
AC Slater - Calm Down
Little Jinder - Youth Blood

What T&B artist(s) do you most relate with?
Drop the Lime for his unabashed charisma Deathface for his aggressive and unapologetic everything AC Slater for his party catalyzing energy and super genuine vibe. and of course the The Captain for just always being totally on point.
Where do you draw inspiration from?
Sites, Books, etc. My knee jerk answer here would be: Geometry, Grimoires, and the Internet. But if you're looking for a good book recommendation you should check out TechGnosis: Myth, Magic, and Mysticism in the Age of Information by Erik Davis.

What projects do you have coming up?
A hat collaboration with Freshiam.net A long awaited Overthrow T-Shirt line A line extension of secret new flavors and products for Prometheus Springs and of course a sunday night weekly ceremony by the name of LIL DEATH out here in Los Angeles
Whats your favorite project you've worked on?
That's a tough question for me to answer because I like different projects for different reasons but for the sake of answering this question.. I'm going to go with this most recent Basel Castle because we got to collaborate with so many great artist and people. It was a total orgy of creativity and everyone just had the best time. If you were there you know what i'm talking about.. if you missed it there's always next year.
Do you prefer/how often do you work on projects that are music related?
I’d say 90% of the time I’m working on music related projects. Whether it be album art, branding, T-shirts, photoshoots, events or whatever... I just really enjoy making sure stuff has meaning and keeping it pervasive and passionate.

Whats your work/thought process like?
It's like photosynthesis if you were to swap out the sun for ideas and oxygen for manifestations.
Mishka Presents: T&B 5 Year Art Show

On Friday, September 16, 2011, Brooklyn’s world-renowned Trouble & Bass crew celebrates five years of heavy bass mayhem with an art show in collaboration with frequent partners-in-crime Mishka NYC. Held at Mishka’s 350 Broadway space, the show will feature original interpretations of the Trouble & Bass aesthetic by some of the globe’s most-cutting edge artists, including The Zonders, Aerosyn-Lex, L’Amour Supreme, Overthrow, Healeymade, and Droon.
This show is a celebration of a long-standing partnership between Trouble & Bass and Mishka, who have sponsored the troublemaking crew since their first party in a rag-tag space under the JMZ tracks. Since that time, Trouble & Bass have become the undisputed heavy bass champions of the world, a monster crew running crazy parties and a chart-topping record label, while Mishka has become the ne plus ultra of innovation in the streetwear realm.
Many of the artists featured in this show have worked with T&B before, in the form of record covers, flyers, videos, and one-of-a-kind events. The event (which takes place from 5p-9p) will be followed by an epic five-year anniversary party at East Village mega- club Webster Hall, featuring T&B founder Drop The Lime’s live band, London’s dubstep powerhouse DJ Plastician, plus AC Slater, Star Eyes, The Captain, and more special guests.
